Three Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Aklan were given citations here today by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as “Rising Star” awardees.
These awardees in the provincial level are the Fruit of Life Enterprise for the Micro Enterprise Category; Culdora’s Piña Cloth for Small Enterprise Category and Jojo’s Christmas Cottage for Medium Enterprise Category.
According to Engr. Diosdado P. Cadena, Jr., DTI-Aklan Provincial Director, the giving of the Rising Star awards is one way of recognizing the efforts made by MSMEs which contributed to employment and in generating output for the economy.
To sustain the growth and development of MSMEs in the country, the government implemented the SME Star Program.
“The Star Program is an SME competency program that will support and give due recognition to outstanding MSMEs who persevere to improve their growth both in domestic and foreign markets,” Cadena said.
Besides the Rising Star Awards, others under the program include the SME Elite Award and SME Star Presidential Award.
Rosa Foods, producer of processed meat products and other food items is Aklan’s awardee for the Elite Award, which would compete in the regional level.
This year’s first star awardees produce different products which are unique and have gained prominence not only in local but in international markets as well.
The Fruit of Life Enterprises produces coconut-based products like virgin coconut oil, colognes, soaps and lately, coco sugar made from sweet coconut sap.
Culdora Piña Cloth has been producing its share of Aklan’s exquisite loom-woven Piña Cloth which has become an anchor for export of a Manila-based business establishment as well as livelihood generator of 60 or more residents who are either loom weavers or embroiderers.
Culdora also sources its materials from piña planters of three or more municipalities who supply it with piña fiber.
Jojo’s Christmas Cottage, on the other hand, is the only all-year round Christmas store in the country, which manufactures and distributes Precious Moments dolls not only of American influence but have extended to recognize Asian culture such as Chinese Angel doll and Precious Moment Thai Doll.
As prizes, the three awardees under the Rising Star category received a DTI Citation signed by Aklan Governor Carlito S. Marquez, Provincial Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Council (PMSMED) Chairperson and DTI Provincial Director Diosdado P. Cadena, Jr., Co-Chairperson. (JCM/VGV PIA 6 Aklan)
