New Washington Information: Named after the first President of the United States, George Washington, New Washington is a 4th class municipality in the province of Aklan, Philippines. It is bounded by the municipality of Batan in the East; Kalibo in the West; and Sibuyan Sea on the North. Agriculture is an important sector of the local economy where fishing and rice farming are considered vital contributors. The Municipality of New Washington operates two (2) ports in Dumaguit and Poblacion; both ports cater to passenger and commercial boats and serve as major trade routes between the province of Aklan and Manila. New Washington is the third most populous municipality in Aklan, holding 8% of the province's total population. According to the 2007 census, it is the home to 39,656 residents. The number has increased 16.7% since the year 2000 when the official count was only 33,981. New Washington is the birth place of Cardinal Jaime Sin, previous Archbishop of Manila. Shortly after his passing in 2005, a commemorative bust was installed at the heart of the town plaza, just a stone throw away from the Roman Catholic Church which he helped rebuild in the 80's. The Sea Wall built along Tambak has attracted local visitors because of its unobstructed view of sunrise.
